Comiket 92: Beat the Heat

Comiket 92 took place on Aug 11-13th at the Tokyo Big Sight located in Odaiba. Fortunately this year, we managed to escape most of the high temperatures, thanks to the mostly-cloudy skies. That didn’t stop the sun from peaking out a few times, however.

Similarly to the previous comiket markets, cosplay is a big and attractive component for the con, with at least four dedicated areas dedicated just to it. Lines are typical when you want to take photos of any cosplayer. I try to keep it short and courteous to limit my photo-taking to about 30-90 seconds. Some, however, feel that it’s ok to take well over 5 minutes with the cosplayer, which makes the wait times much longer.

The “dealer’s room” is much different compared to NA cons. Here, they mainly sell exclusive/collectible items you may not be able to get anywhere else. You won’t see any rows of manga or DVDs here! I picked myself up a nice DBZ tie.

The artist room is the largest component of comiket, whereas thousands of artists have hundreds of tables to sell their unique and usually one-time items. Most of it is in Japanese, so for someone like me whose Japanese is limited, pretty picture books or other decorative items are a more attractive option.

I took my friend, who’s first it was in Japan, to comiket and he seemed to enjoy it quite a bit. He also bought a couple ties and some DBZ art booklets. He was impressed by the size of the con. Indeed the halls are large, and there is so much to see.
